Humerus Fracture Operation - Getting My Plate

There are two main forms of reconstructive surgery for a broken humerus that I had explained to me, a humerus rod and a humerus plate. The general gist of each operation goes as follows:

Humeral Rod

This procedure involves drilling through the upper arm and clavical to open up a gap so the rod can be slid down the inside of the humerus. Holes are then drilled through the humerus so screws can be affixed to the rod, securing the break

There is a great photo of the resulting effect on this press release, however, this involves further trauma in order to open up the bone to insert the device.

Humeral Plate

A humeral plate is simply inserted into the arm having made an incision between the bicep and tricep, avoiding the radial nerve and screwed in place to stabilise the break... as model by yours truly below:

Needless to say, the incision to insert a humeral  plate is pretty funky:
As the pictures show, my surgeon decided that not submitting my arm to the further trauma of a humeral rod was for the best and instead opted for a humeral plate. The resulting surgery took in the region of 2 hours and was considerably uncomfortable at first... no surprise there. The most uncomfortable sensation however, was nothing to do with my arm, but hip. You see, they decided that a bone graft was required to stimulate recover within the gap between the bones, and took a piece of bone from my hip, known as an iliac crest harvest. The resulting scar (don't click if you're squeamish) and the sore leg that came with it, were pretty horrific.

Plenty of morphine, tramadol, diclofenac, paracetamol and 3 nights in a private room (beats sharing with "the poor old dear who had obviously left her marbles somewhere back in 1973 who refuses to sleep" again!) and I was released with an appointment to see yet another professional who we will dub: Little Miss Physiotherapy.

  1. I was told today that I am going to need surgery after fracturing my humerus bone (as well in half) 4 months ago. I started doing the bone stimulation 6 weeks ago and that doesn't seem to have helped improve the fracture. So now surgery. Part of me is relieved that I will have a surgery and not play this waiting game. But another part of me doesn't want surgery. He told me that there's still a possibility that it may not fix the problem. Which leaves me at a loss of words. I'm nervous and decided to look online and I don't know if that was such a great idea. But then I came across your post. My surgeon said he was going to use a plate and he did say the incision was going to be long. But I still feel so uneasy about it.
    How was your recovery?

  2. We are able to manufacture a superior quality range of Small LC DCP Plate (Dynamic Compression Plate). GPC Medical offered plate is widely used in orthopedics for internal fixation of bone after fractures.

  3. I had 7 screws and a plate taken out after a broken humerus 4 weeks ago. One more month in a sling. Definately no minor injury for sure. Total accident, one screw dislodged and hurt like a bitch before all the hardware was taken out. It was very painful for months, I quit smoking, eat nothing but health food, get lots of sleep. Not sure what the outcome will be but doing my VERY best. Definately NO joke eh Basically surgeons have no clue how well every individual will heal and recover. Most of the outcome is pretty much up to the victim of the creepy accident as I see it. Makes sense, never would have quit smoking otherwise that's a fact. Wish me the best as I do you all

    1. P.s. I just missed a couple steps whilst half asleep and fell hard on our flagstone landing. Broke my humorous clean in half. I'm a 56 yr. old woman in great health. I figured a cast would fix me up after a couple months an I'd be good to go. Never broke a bone before. What a delusion, big deal it was and still is 😜😜😱👎🏿 Be careful peeps.

  4. P.s. Surgery in Surrey B.C. is stressful as I suppose it is everywhere. Almost got bumped ( as they call it) just before the surgery. Life or death emergency I was told. You cannot be angry with that, freaky never the less after all the prep, time off work, fasting, double bathing in special antibacterial hermetically sealed sponges and such. Thank God they still had time to do it. Oxycodone is what they gave me and worked excellent for the pain, I was given more than enough and still have some left over. I think supplements and vitamins are very helpful along with moderate exersize and fresh air. Take care peeps 😍
